Our Crowns Of Art
In the heart of Harlem, spoken word artist Jumoke writes a love letter to her natural hair - a letter that depicts both the discouraging narratives she learned about her hair as a child as well as the ways she is challenging those narratives as an adult. While Jumoke shares her letter, young Black girls and young adults confidently display their natural hair from afros to tight curls. This short film takes the viewer along a journey of how Black women are healing their younger selves by reclaiming their natural hair from being viewed as “too difficult” to becoming “crowns of art”.
